Make a Difference

In 2006, six students from the International School of the Americas, (ISA), approached theArtsFund with the idea of producing a fund raiser for theArtsFund as their project.  Their mission was to broaden the awareness of the variety of arts in San Antonio. The school asks the students in the freshman class to select a program under their schools “Make a Difference” program.

These students, Jordan Birnbaum, Rosalie Bonner, Clara Gutierrez, Colin McGilvray, John Miller, and Consuelo Avila produced the first event held at the Magik theatre in March of 2006.  The event was called “From Garage Spaces to A Night of the Arts”  and featured performances from theArtsFund affiliates, and local “garage” bands.Florence MacDaniel, then a member of theArtsFund board of directors, volunteered to mentor the students as they worked to produce the event.  Florence has continued in the service working with each class since inception of the events.

The students produced the entire event.  This first effort raised $750.   In subsequent years, the students continued to select theArtsFund as their project and two additional groups produced events in 2007 and 2008.
The 2007 event called “Art: A Night of Arts” organized by Emma Davis, Andrew Hill, Nick Lopez, Conner Reeh, Benjamin Spener, and Natalie Wilson raised $1,161.86.

The arts are under attack. In todays demanding world the arts are thought of as non-essential subjects in school. The 2006 Fiscal Year Education Budget Summary proposed to make a cut of 35.6 million dollars in art education. The event hART Attack will raise money and awareness for the arts. All money made will be donated to theArtsFund, the only United Arts Fund in Texas. theArtsFund was created to provide an additional source of funding for the arts.

Art pieces by students and professional artist will be sold at the event to raise money. Coffee and pastries will be sold in the lounge at the theatre. Money will also be raised by selling tickets for $5 and t-shirts with the hART Attack logo for $10. Both tickets and t-shirts can be purchased at the event or from the following people:
