Supporting acquisition of contemporary art for the McNay Art Museum is a vital part of the mission of the McNay Contemporary Collectors Forum (MCCF). Since 2003, MCCF has purchased one or two works of art for the McNay’s collection at the group’s annual fall View & Vote. To date, MCCF has acquired 12 contemporary works in various media.Previous acquisitions include works by John Miller (2003), Ed Kienholz and Nancy Reddin Kienholz (2004), John Fraser (2005), Susie Rosmarin (2005), Lesley Dill (2006), Sandy Skoglund (2006), Chakaia Booker (2007), Roger Shimomura (2008), Lance Letscher (2009), Whitfield Lovell (2010), and Radcliffe Bailey (2011).MCCF’s selection for 2012 is a large color photograph by Brazilian artist Vik Muniz.

Vaudeville and Commedia Dell' Arte are seamlessly woven into an uproarious fable of scheming lovers, mistaken identities, and clownish greedy servants. Balancing on a delicately taut tightrope of mischief and revenge, the crafty servant Scapin promises to help two pairs of wide-eyed lovers while juggling an array of elaborate disguises to keep their wealthy fathers from discovering the truth. Remaining true to Moliere's classic farcical tale from the seventeenth century, this fresh and side-splitting adaptation adds a late twentieth century spin to the language and hilarious non-stop action. This production features some of San Antonio's most talented actors including recent Juliard School of Drama graduate Brendan Spieth in the titular role.

What is Family Art Play? The last Sunday of every month the McNay offers a program for families that involves looking carefully at works of art and investigating a studio or performance component afterwards. McNay members reserve space by calling 210.805.1768 by noon Friday before the program. Nonmembers pick up remaining passes the day of the program. All family programs are free with museum admission.

Los Tres Grandes: The three big…. What? Three of the greatest artists muralist in history! Cities with murals like San Antonio are indebted to their legacy. Come down to the Guadalupe and get inspired with the magnificent West Side murals and the work of Mexican Muralists Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, & David Siqueiros. You will discover their work both from Mexico and in the United States. You’ll also be a part of the team learning and making your very own mural here at the Guadalupe!

· Week 2: June 17-21

chun-ta-chun-ta / chun-ta-ta-ta… Here come the Mariachis!!!:Music should always be a part of our lives. You will be singing, dancing and playing instruments. Imagine making your own instrument and playing in your own Mariachi band! It will be possible this week at Camp Guadalupe.

· Week 3: June 24-28

Yo soy Joaquin, Bilingual Latino Poetry:Soy Joaquin, soy Mario, I’m Elena… Let ‘s tell everyone who we are. We can discover more about ourselves by sharing with others who we are individually and collectively! You will be able to define yourself with words and with pictures expanding your vocabulary and your language skills as we play language games with our Spanish and English.

Week 4: July 8-12

The mystery of the Crystal Skulls (Mosaics) Is it supernatural, archeology or a hoax?:Everybody likes a good Mystery, right? We can all be Sherlock, Tintin or Nancy Drew for a week to discover and tell everyone about our theories on the origins of the Crystal Skulls.

Week 5: July 15-19

Rolling!!! Quiet on the Set! Acción!!:Actors, Directors, Screenwriters, Set builders, and Campers wanted! Get ready to man the lights, concentrate, you’ll need to be silent on the set, and then break out in laughter to create just the right atmosphere for your collective comedy, documentary, or will it be a drama?

Week 6: July 22-26

We are in Business! Food art: Campers put on your chef hat! This week we will be in the business of creating all sorts of edible things. We will also be attentive to how our food creations look and smell and to designing a wonderful experience for our guests. By the end of the week we will have tried all sorts of interesting dishes and be ready to open up our one night restaurant!

CAMP CELEBRATION NIGHT: All campers invite their families to attend a night of celebration and performances that have been created in each and every week of the Summer Camp. Friday 26^th of July 7:00 pm.

TUITION:$100 per week. Students can participate in one or more of the week sessions. All participants must have a current GCAC membership at the $25 level. San Antonio Announces
3rd Annual LUMINARIA: Arts Night in San Antonio
March 13, 2010

SAN ANTONIO—The award-winning Luminaria: Arts Night in San Antonio will take place 6 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, March 13, 2010 with performance stages, streetscape art, light installations and galleries. The celebration will be in downtown San Antonio on Alamo St. between Market and Durango, including the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, HemisFair Park and La Villita. The 3rd annual, FREE and open to the public celebration of San Antonio’s artists, musicians, performers and cultural organizations is the only one of its kind in the entire state of Texas and was inspired by similar celebrations in Chicago, Paris, Rome and Madrid.

Luminaria 2010 is being co-chaired by Paula Owen, artist and President of the Southwest School of Art & Craft; and George Cisneros, artist and co-founder of Urban 15. An artist-driven celebration, Luminaria is a collaboration of several hundred artists and more than 40 non-profit organizations coming together to magnify every major discipline in the arts including dance, theater, creative writing, music, visual arts, new media and interdisciplinary projects. Already, Luminaria has attracted more than 100,000 participants in both 2008 and 2009 and has received national and international acclaim. Luminaria 2009 received a Pinnacle Award from the International Downtown Association and is being recognized during the 55th IDA Annual Conference in Milwaukee.

Artists and non-profit organizations are encouraged to submit an application for participation in Luminaria 2010. The application form will be available for download at www.luminariasa.org by September 20, 2009. The deadline for submitting proposals is 5 p.m. CST on October 31, 2009.

As the arts calendar in San Antonio resumes full speed this fall, pressure is mounting on the Bexar County Arts and Cultural Fund, better known simply as theFund. Area arts organizations in general have seen donations shrink during the economic recession. Those seeking new sources of donations have difficulties doing so. TheFund itself is closed to organizations it doesn't already support. Only 4 years old, theFund has supported 28 arts groups since its start, a large commitment compared to similar arts fundraising organizations around the country. TheFund operates similar to the United Way. More than 60 employers wishing to support the arts set up payroll deductions for employee voluntary donations. TheFund participates in the United Way's various combined campaigns. Direct individual, corporate and foundation gifts also are sought. For clarification here are the choices as we define them:

Music- Includes all forms, from singing to symphony, and all genres, classical to rock.

Dance - this includes all forms of dance from ballet to hip-hop.

Folk Art is characterized by a style, in which traditional rules of proportion and perspective are not employed. Art that is produced generally by people with no formal training, or by members of a cultural group to preserve its traditional culture. It often times is predominantly functional. Sculptural objects in wood, stone, and metal include toys, spoons, candlesticks, and religious items. Deorative objects constructed of existing objects. Folk architecture may include public and residential buildings, such as eastern European wooden churches and U.S. frontier log cabins.
